Why This Indicator Matters
A growing body of research has revealed the prevalence of chronic absence and its critical role in student achievement. Starting in the early grades, the percentage of students missing 10 percent of the school year can reach remarkably high levels, and these early absences can rob students of the time they need to develop literacy skills. Fortunately, research also shows that chronic absence can be addressed when school districts, communities and policymakers work together to monitor the problem and implement solutions that address the underlying causes.
