These data represent the number of reports made to a county's Child Protective Services office. Each report represents a referral made to a county's Child Protective Services (CPS) office that involves allegations of child abuse or neglect. One CPS report can involve multiple children, or multiple allegations involving the same child.
The rate represents the number of abuse and neglect reports for a given year, per 1,000 children ages birth to 17 in the state or county. This rate is calculated by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families and is published in its annual reports.
These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.
