Definition

These data represent the number and percent of births each year to mothers without a high school degree (regardless of maternal age). Incidences less than 5 or missing data are indicated with N.A. (not available).

The number of births for which the educational status of the mother is unknown increased sharply between 2010 and 2011, although the number of births for which information is missing remains under 1% of all births. Prior to 2011, births to mothers without a high school degree is calculated as a share of total births; for the years 2011 and after, the indicator is calculated as a share of births for which the educational status of the mother is known.

These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.

Data Source

Data are from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Wisconsin Interactive Statistics on Health, Birth Counts Module. The data source has not published new data for this indicator in recent years, but the indicator will be updated in the KIDS COUNT Data Center when new data are released. Until then, these data may provide useful historical information for those working in this field.
