Definition
The estimated number and percentage of children under age 18 by race/ethnicity living in a census tract with an estimated poverty level of 30% or greater, as determined using American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.
Using Table B17001 of the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey Estimates, an estimated percent below 100% poverty is determined for each census tract. For the census tracts with an estimated poverty level of 30% or greater, the B01001-series of tables are used to estimate the population under age 18 by race and ethnicity for each tract with a poverty level of at least 30 percent. The census tract data is then aggregated to the county and state level for each race/ethnicity cohort.
Data Source
U.S. Census Bureau, 2006-2010 through 2016-2020 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, Tables B01001, B01001B-B01001H, and B17001.
Notes
Although overlapping 5-year time periods are shown for this indicator, the Census Bureau suggests comparing periods that do not overlap—for example, comparing 2010–2014 estimates with 2016–2020 estimates. This means waiting longer to identify a trend. However, in areas undergoing fundamental shifts in the size or composition of the population, change may be so substantial that it will be obvious after only a few years. For more information on making comparisons with ACS multi-year estimates, see Appendix 1 of ACS General Handbook.
Non-Hispanic Black and African American is not available from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey Summary tables. Therefore, race/ethnic groups represented in this table are not mutually exclusive. The category of white includes only non-Hispanic white. The categories "Black or African American" and "Some Other Race" include both Hispanic and non-Hispanic.

S=Indicates suppressed data (less than 10 cases).
A zero value indicates that the county had no census tracts with an estimated poverty rate of at least 30%, or that estimates reflect that no one under age 18 resided in the census tract for the given race/ethnicity cohort during the time period.
Smaller numbers reflect less reliable estimates and should be used with caution.
