This is the rate of deaths of infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births
At the state and county level, this variable is a rate per 1,000 live births based on a five-year total. The rate is calculated as 1,000 times the number of infant deaths due to all causes divided by the number of total births. At the national level, the rate is calculated at 1,000 times the number of infant deaths divided by the number of live births.
Indicator clarification: Due to the small number of deaths to infants under one year of age on the county level, a small change in the actual number may result in a large percent change for trend data. The national rate is based on one year of data.
