Notes

These numbers do not include children who are in foster care, who may have been placed due to abuse or neglect.

Data for St. John is included with St.Thomas.

The VI Department of Human Services takes referrals for child abuse and neglect through age 17. These numbers do not include children who are in foster care, who may have been placed due to abuse or neglect. Human Services data is for fiscal year. Population data is calendar year, as reported in the VI Community Survey. Rates are calculated using the child population age 0-18.

Child abuse and neglect cases are routinely under-reported in the USVI, as acknowledged by members of territorial not-for-profit and government agencie working in the field of child abuse and neglect. The number of maltreated children, therefore, is likely higher than documented, and the negative impact on the community is likely greater than the figures can show.
