These data represent the number of arrests of children under age 18. This juvenile arrest data includes the arrests of 17-year-olds, who in Wisconsin are considered adults for purposes of prosecution. For crime reporting purposes, Wisconsin includes arrests of 17-year-olds with juvenile arrests, to comply with federal requirements that require uniform crime reporting policies across states. These data represent the number of arrests, not the number of youth arrested: if a youth was arrested more than once in a county within a calendar year, they will be counted more than once in these totals. These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.
Data Source
Some information on juvenile arrests is available on the Wisconsin Department of Justice's website. Arrest figures change slightly over time as local agencies update or correct their information. Data for 2022 and 2023 were provided from the Wisconsin Department of Justice through a data request, and may not match data that will be updated later in the year on their dashboard for arrests.
