PROVIDER

Definition

The number of child care providers as of September of the year listed. The number of child care providers is broken down into each of the three license types: Child care centers, family homes, and group homes.

As defined by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Achievement, and Potential:
  • Family home and group home licenses allow for supervision of smalller numbers of unrelated children. The licensee is a permanent resident of the home where child care supervision is conducted. Family homes allow for supervision of 1-6 children, while group homes allow for supervision of 7-12 children.
  • Center licenses allow for a greater number of children to be supervised in a commercial or otherwise non-residential environment. Licensed capacity in centers is determined by a combination of square footage, the number of child care staff, and the age(s) of the children enrolled.
