Why This Indicator Matters
Data is needed to determine the number of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and young elementary school students who need child care and/or will be enrolling in public schools.
In 2025, there were 1,367 less children ages 0-8 in Maine than in 2024. Furthermore, in 2020, five years earlier, there were 4,121 more children ages 0-8 than there are in 2025.
For the state as a whole in 2025, there are 1,705 more 8-year-olds than infants under age 1, so it is expected that school enrollments will continue to decline.
