Definition

Data represent the estimated number and percentage of population under food insecurity for a given year. Food insecurity refers to the USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food insecurity may also reflect a household need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time.

Data Source

Feeding America, Map the Meal Gap. Kids Count division of the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth collected and organized data.

Notes

Population and food insecurity data in state total may not reflect the sum of all counties total.
