Why This Indicator Matters
Although suicide rates were largely stable the past several years, rates among young people ages 10 to 24 declined in 2024 compared to the peak rates observed in 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The declines were driven largely by reductions in suicide rates among boys and young men, where decreases were observed across every age group. Rates among girls remained statistically unchanged.

At the county level, all county level data except for Cumberland was flagged as unreliable because it did not meet Maine CDC standards for reliability.

Definition
This indicator shows the rate per 10,000 of deaths by suicide for youth ages 10 to 19. It is based on 5-year averages where 2025 represents data for 2021-2025 averaged and 2024 represents data for the years 2020-2024 and so forth.

Rate is based on small number of cases and should be interpreted with caution. Data has been suppressed to preserve confidentiality. Maine CDC revised their rules to suppress both numbers and rates for sub-state level such as counties when the number is less than 6. This is reflected in data from 2016-2020 and forward.
