Why This Indicator Matters

Chronic absenteeism impacts students’ overall academic performance and success, and has a negative impact on test scores and graduation rates. Safety concerns, poor health, or lack of transportation can be a few of the many factors causing students to miss school. Cities with a significant low-income population face this issue the most, yet low income families are the ones who can benefit most from quality education.[i]

Definition

This indicator reports the percentage of students who have missed at least 10 percent of the total number of days enrolled in a single school year, for any reason. Pre-kindergarten students are excluded from this calculation.

Connecticut State Department of Education, Retrieved from EdSight, Academic Years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, and 2022-2023.

Notes

The percentages of students meeting or exceeding goals were summarized from State Department of Education reports. Counts of 20 or fewerexcluding zerowere suppressed by the Department, as were percentages generated from suppressed counts.
