Why This Indicator Matters
The WIC program helps low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding people, and infants and children up to age 5, stay healthy. It provides nutritious foods to supplement diets and teach about healthy eating, including promoting and supporting breastfeeding. It also connects families with healthcare services and other programs that help Wisconsin families stay healthy. Results of studies conducted by the USDA and other, non-governmental groups show that WIC is one of the nation’s most successful and cost-effective nutrition intervention programs and that the program improves the health of participants during important periods of nutritional need.
