Why This Indicator Matters
The WIC program helps low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding people, infants and children up to age 5, stay healthy. They give nutritious foods to supplement diets and teach about healthy eating, including promoting and supporting breastfeeding. They also connect families with healthcare services and other programs that help Wisconsin families stay healthy. Results of studies conducted by USDA and other non-government groups show that WIC is one of the nation’s most successful and cost-effective nutrition intervention programs and improves the health of participants during important periods of nutritional need.
