Definition

These data represent the number and percent of people under age 19 with public health insurance. Public health insurance includes the federal programs Medicaid, Medicare, and Veteran's Health Administration health care; the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); and individual state plans. Having public and private coverage are not mutually exclusive. These data are five-year averages. 

These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.
