Why This Indicator Matters
Studies have linked bullying to a person’s psychological well-being (or ill health), especially for the victim, who is at a higher risk of depression and anxiety. Bullying may also take place surreptitiously and discreetly, harming people’s emotions through online or mobile chatter. Even 40 years later, the psychological effects of bullying can still be felt, and either short-term or long-term physical health effects may result. Bullied people are more likely to drop out of school without a diploma, make less money or be unemployed, and have unstable relationships. A variety of mental health issues, including sadness and anxiety, as well as poor self-esteem or an inferiority complex, might also be present.
