Why This Indicator Matters

High school students were asked if they had a parent incarcerated in the past 12 months.

Adult crime impacts individuals, families and entire communities. Families of inmates face challenges such as lack of financial support and social alienation related to the stigma of having a family member in prison. Children in particular may experience extreme difficulties during a period of parental incarceration.
