Why This Indicator Matters
The majority of our state’s public high school students who go on to college attend a public college or university in Massachusetts. Students attending public campuses are significantly more likely than those attending private ones to live and work in Massachusetts after graduation, contributing to our communities and our economy over the long-term. Students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities are more likely to be attending public colleges and universities. The percentages showing the distribution of graduates by type of institution (public or private, type of public institution) all refer to the percent of graduates who have enrolled in college or university.Data Source

Notes
The Mass. Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education collects information on enrollment in institutions of higher education from the National Student Clearinghouse, which receives data from more than 3,600 colleges, enrolling 98 percent of U.S. college students. Other student data are from the Student Information Management System (SIMS) database.
Updated January 2023 with data from school year 2020-2021 graduates.
