Why This Indicator Matters

Communities across America are impacted by the negative effects of juvenile delinquency. Juvenile participation in criminal behavior may have immediate negative effects on physical, social, emotional and academic development in addition to having impacts that may last into the child’s adult life. Advocates argue that in order to address youth violence, society should focus on fulling families out of poverty, providing children with adequate health care, improving access to quality education for all children, preventing child abuse and neglect, protecting children from domestic and community violence and giving children support and guidance as needed.
