Definition
"Other" includes children who are Asian, multiracial, Native American, or some other race. For all indicators, Texas KIDS COUNT uses the racial and ethnic labels, categories, and definitions provided by the source agency. In other words, if the source for the data uses the term "Black", then that is the term we will use in the Data Center. If the source uses the term "African-American," then we will use that term in the Data Center. As these labels and categories may differ by source, they may also differ between indicators.

The Texas Demographic Center adjusted its methodology for population estimates beginning with 2014 estimates. Between 2013 & 2014, a decrease in the Anglo child population and increase in the "Other" (which includes Multiracial) child population can be observed. Mother’s race/ethnicity had been previously used to represent the race/ethnicity of newborn, but some newborns previously classified as "Anglo" are now classified as "Other" to more accurately reflect race/ethnicity distribution in the birth data in the 2010 census. The adjustments mostly affected populations under four years of age. Caution is advised when comparing county-level estimates pre- and post-2014 by race/ethnicity for age subgroups.
