Definition
Children waived into adult court is a count of the number of children who are under 17 years old who were transferred to adult court through the waiver process. It does not include 17-year-olds, who are all treated as adults in Wisconsin. It also does not include those children who commit certain crimes (for example, first degree intentional homicide) which can be filed directly in adult court. These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.
Data Source
Reports of children waived into adult court by year can be found on the state courts website under their circuit court statistics publications. The data, by state and county, can be found on this site in the yearly juvenile caseload summary reports here: http://wicourts.gov/publications/statistics/circuit/circuitstats.htm
Notes
In December 2011, Portage County joined the other 71 Wisconsin counties in the full implementation of Consolidated Court Automation Programs (CCAP), which helps local clerks and court staff more easily and uniformly track and manage circuit court cases. Information for Portage County for 2011 or prior years may not be complete, and this is indicated with N.A. (not available).
