Definition

The number and percentage of grandparents responsible for their own grandchildren under 18 years old who are living with them, by race and ethnicity. Percentage is derived by dividing the number of grandparents who are responsible for their own grandchildren living with them, by the total number of grandparents living with their own grandchildren. For example, in 2022, 41% of Hispanic grandparents living with their own grandchildren were also responsible for them.
The U.S. Census uses these race categories: White, Black or African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, Some Other Race, and Two or More Races. In addition, the U.S. Census uses two ethnic categories: Hispanic and Non-Hispanic. Hispanic (or Latino) refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. The term 'origin' is used to indicate a person's (or the person's parents) heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth.

U.S. Census, American Community Survey, 1-year estimates, Tables B10051, B10051B, B10051C, B10051D, B10051E, B10051F, B10051G, B10051H, B10051I.

Notes

Data are not available (NA) because the number of sample cases is too small. When this occurs, as in some racial and ethnic groups, problems with statistical instability may occur. An unstable count or rate may fluctuate widely across time periods. An unstable count or rate should be interpreted with caution and should not be used to predict outcomes.
Some people in each race listed may identify also as Hispanic.  Thus, the sum of the percentages may be greater than 100%.

County-level data available by request.

New Mexico state-level data typically are from the American Community Survey 1-year estimates. As a result of COVID-19 data collection challenges, the 2020 New Mexico state-level data are 5-year estimates and not comparable to other years.
