Why This Indicator Matters
Having an overall count by age group and county helps understand issues of access and service use by county. Seeing trends over time of populations in age groups can pinpoint counties that are gaining or losing population.
What the data shows
For Maine as a whole, the child population has been declining each year. since 2012. Looking at 2016 to 2020, there are 6,762 fewer children or a decline of 2.7%, to 247,952 children in 2020 in Maine.
For children ages 5-17, there are 6,762 fewer children, or a decline of 2.7% from 2016 to 2020. For children under age 5, the numbers have declined statewide by 1,688 or 2.6% from 2016 to 2020.
For children under age 5, two counties actually grew in population of young children by more than 1% from 2016 -2020. These were Piscataquis County which gained 230 young children or 33% growth, and Lincoln County which gained 133 young children or 10% growth. The county with the largest rate of loss of young children was Knox-with a 14% loss or 263 children ages 0 to 4 in that 5-year period.
