Definition
The child abuse rate is the number of substantiated child victims per 1,000 children in New Mexico by state fiscal year (SFY), July 1 through June 30. For example, in SFY 2022, approximately 11 children in every 1,000 children under the age of 18 in New Mexico were victims of abuse or neglect.
A child abuse allegation is substantiated when it is determined that the victim is under the age of 18, a parent or caretaker has been identified as the perpetrator and/or identified as failing to protect the victim, and credible evidence exists to support the conclusion by the investigator that the child has been abused and/or neglected as defined by the New Mexico Children's Code. Types of child abuse allegations are physical abuse, sexual abuse, and physical neglect.
