Definition
This is the number of children found to be victims of abuse or neglect per 1,000 children under age 18.
At the state and county level, this indicator is a rate per 1,000 children based on a three-year average of victims from the federal fiscal years. The rate is calculated as 1,000 times the number of victims divided by the total number of children under 18. The number of children under age 18 is based on the latest population data.
Indicator clarification: Differences in reporting procedures over the years prevent comparison of rates between counties and trends over time.
