Definition

The rate per 1,000 live births of children who died before their first birthday by race/ethnicity. This indicator contains data in 5-year intervals.

Notes

Although overlapping 5-year time periods are shown for this indicator, it is suggested to compare periods that do not overlap—for example, comparing 2017–2021 with 2022–2026 rates. This means waiting longer to identify a trend. However, in areas undergoing fundamental shifts in the size or composition of the population, change may be so substantial that it will be obvious after only a few years.

The 2022 rate per 1,000 infants represents the sum of deaths from 2018 to 2022, calculated as the total deaths over the five-year period multiplied by 1,000 and then divided by the total number of infants.
