Unduplicated confirmed reports of child abuse and neglect, rate per 1,000 children birth to age 5

Data Source

Rates are calculated using the number of child abuse cases reported by the Hawaii State Department of Human Services and estimates for the total population provided by the National Center of Health Statistics. The data sources are as follows:

Hawaii State Department of Human Services. "A Statistical Report on Child Abuse and Neglect in Hawaii," various years. Audit, Quality Control, and Research Office.

National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Ages 0 to 85 years and over. Vintage  postcensal estimates of the resident population of the United States, bridged race, Hispanic origin, and sex. Prepared under a collaborative arrangement with the U.S. Census Bureau. Available from: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/bridged_race.htm. Please see technical notes regarding Vintage NCHS denominator years.

Technical Note:
Regarding the denominators calculated using National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Vintage postcensal estimates: NCHS populations are seasonally adjusted which means that every year, the estimates are revised to reflect updated input data and new NCHS population controls. The denominators using population estimates are not updated retrospectively. The denominator for years 2014-2017 of this indicator is based on 2017 Vintage postcensal NCHS estimates, the denominator for year 2018 of this indicator is based on 2018 Vintage postcensal NCHS estimates, and the denominator for year 2019 is based on 2019 Vintage postcensal NCHS estimates, and so on.
