Why This Indicator Matters
The number of young children in Maine continues to decline, and this is particularly true in some of the most rural counties. The number of children has an impact on schools, the labor force and the communities in Maine.
The number of young children continues to decline. Overall, between 2015 and 2025 the number of children ages 0-5 declined by 5,201 from 78,356 to 73,155 or a 7% decrease in population. In these 10 years, fourteen out of sixteen counties have had declines.
As of 2025, Cumberland had 23% of the children ages 5 & younger in Maine followed by York (15%), Penobscot (11%), Androscoggin (10%), and Kennebec (9%). Over two thirds of Maine's young children live in one of these 5 counties.
