Definition

Household income is the income of all household members ages 15 and older. Median household income divides the distribution of the incomes of all households into two parts—with half falling below the median and half above the median.
Median household income is shown in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Data Source

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 1-year estimates, Table B19013.

Notes

Household income differs from family income in that it includes the incomes of members of a household who are not related to the householder (such as boarders, renters and roommates). Because many households consist of only one person, the median household income is usually lower than the median family income.

New Mexico state-level data typically are from the American Community Survey 1-year estimates. As a result of COVID-19 data collection challenges, the 2020 New Mexico state-level data are 5-year estimates and not comparable to other years.
