Receipt of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) states the average monthly caseload during a given three-year period of time of children living in families who receive public assistance to help support the child. Percent of Children receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) is stated as a percent of all children living in a given area during the middle year of the three year range of time covered by the data. S indicates suppressed data of less than 10 cases.

Notes
Children receiving public assistance is typically the most current measure of children required to survive on inadequate resources. For SFY1995 through SFY1997 Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) was the public assistance programs in effect. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) was the public assistance program in effect for all other years presented.
