Why This Indicator Matters

The decline in the childhood population poses a significant challenge to the economic and fiscal sustainability of the island. Research has shown that an aging population places a strain on government resources due to the rising costs of healthcare and pensions. In Puerto Rico's case, this fiscal strain may be exacerbated by a considerably smaller revenue base resulting from the decrease in the child population.
