Definition

Live births weighing less than 1,500 grams (3 pounds and 4 ounces) are reported based on the mother’s place of residence rather than the place of birth. Each year, a small number of births have no recorded birth weight; these cases are excluded from the calculations.

Data Source

Data petition to the Puerto Rico Department of Health, Auxiliary Secretariat for Planning and Development, Division of Statistical Analysis.

Notes

It is possible for the total number of births to differ from the overall reported frequency. This discrepancy may occur when the municipality of residence is not specified or when the birth takes place outside Puerto Rico, even if the mother is a resident of a Puerto Rico municipality.
