Why This Indicator Matters
Data is needed to determine the number of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and young elementary school students who need child care.
In 2021, there were 803 more children ages 0-8 in Maine than in 2022. Furthermore, in 2017, five years earlier, there were 2,594 more children ages 0-8. The county with the largest population of young children ages 0-8 in 2022 was Cumberland County with 26,143; next was York with 17,841. In terms of population change between 2017 and 2022, four counties had an increase in young child population. These were Lincoln (+172), Piscataquis (+224), Cumberland (+51) and Aroostook (+15). Eight counties lost over 5% of the population of this age group. This included: Androscoggin, (-6%), Franklin (-6%), Hancock (-5%), Knox (-7%), Penobscot (-5%), Sagadahoc (-5%), Waldo (-6%), and Washington (-6%). Comparing the number of babies under age 1 with the number of children age 8, in 2022, every county had more 8-year-olds than infants under age 1. For the state as a whole, there were 1,995 more 8-year-olds than infants under age 1, so it is expected that school enrollments will continue to decline.
