Why This Indicator Matters
When affordable housing is unavailable, families are left with no choice but to spend a large share of their income on housing. This leaves less money for other essentials and can lead to overcrowding, landlord exploitation, frequent moves, and residence in substandard housing with hazards like lead exposure and energy inefficiency. These conditions further strain household budgets and put family health and safety at risk.
