Definition

The number and percentage of children 2-4 years of age enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to the 95th percentile for children of same age and gender. The prevalence rate is the percentage of obesity. The denominator for calculating the percentage of obesity is the number of children 2-4 years of age participating in WIC. Records with unknown or invalid data were excluded from the analyses.
Data relate to State Fiscal Year (July-June).

Data Source

The WIC Data System, Division of Family Health and Wellness, Tennessee Department of Health.

Notes

* Prevalence rates were suppressed for counties with small numbers (less than 100) of children 2-4 years ages enrolled in the WIC program in a specific data year. In 2016, CDC changed the cut points for biologically implausible values (BIVs). These changes did not affect the calculation of percentiles or subsequent calculation of obesity. Due to this change, obesity prevalence for 2016 forward will not be compared to previous years.
