Why This Indicator Matters

Smoking during pregnancy increases a baby's risk of being born premature and having a low birthweight. It also increases a baby's risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID).

Number - live births to women who reported smoking during their pregnancy.
Percent - live births to women who reported smoking during their pregnancy per 100 live births.

Data Source

Live births 2011-2021: Louisiana State Center for Health Statistics, Louisiana Department of Health.

Notes

LNE (low number event) - a value of fewer than five events or (for 2011) a rate based on fewer than 20 events (or based on fewer than 5 events after 2011) and is thus not reported. 

Please note that the actual number of mothers who smoke during pregnancy may be higher than the data reported here because some mothers who smoke may not report doing so.
