Why This Indicator Matters
Having an overall count by age group and county helps understand issues of access and service use by county. Seeing trends over time of populations in age groups can pinpoint counties that are gaining or losing population.
Over 10 years (2015-2025) Maine saw a 5% (12,420) decrease in our child population. Only 1 county, Piscataquis, saw an increase of 3% over this time. Franklin (-16%), Knox (-12%), and Waldo (-9%) saw the biggest percent decreases.
Looking at 5 years instead of 10 years, between 2020 and 2025, there were 3,707 fewer children ages 0-17, a 1% decrease.
From just 2024 to 2025 Maine saw a decrease in the child population under age 18 of 2,837. All counties saw a percent decrease in their child populations except for Oxford (+4%), Somerset (+2%), and Penobscot (+0%). The counties that saw the biggest decreases in their child population were Franklin (-11%), Sagadhaoc (-3%), Washington (-3%), Knox (-3%), Cumberland (-2%), Kennebec (-2%), and York (-1%).
