Definition

Babies with low birth weights are at risk for respiratory conditions, cognitive and developmental delays, and other chronic health conditions.  This indicator represents the number and percent of infants weighing less than 2500 grams (5.5 pounds) at birth by county of maternal residence.

Notes

Numbers and percentages represent the rolling average of data for three years. For example, the year 2016 is the average of 2014, 2015, and 2016.  Averages are used to smooth fluctuations in rates due to small numbers in some counties, as these may not be indicative of actual trends.
