Definition

Percent of infants born weighing less than 2,500 grams (5 pounds, 8 ounces) at birth. Births are classified according to mother's race and ethnicity.

The 2003 revision of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth allows the reporting of more than one race for each parent in accordance with the revised standards issued by OMB in 1997. These revisions were implemented in North Carolina during 2010, resulting in the capability for reporting of expanded race categories and Hispanic-origin groups that differed from the race categories used in previous years.

As a result of these revisions, live births data from 2011 forward contain included both race and ethnicity categories. Therefore, data beginning with 2011 should not be compared to data from 2001–2010 which contained different race categories.
