Why This Indicator Matters
First grade retention is an indicator of school readiness. This important measure gives us an indication of how well our children are prepared for first grade and how successful our Alabama First Class Pre-K program is.

Definition
Number of students enrolled in the first grade during the specified school years who were not promoted to the second grade. This number is expressed as a percentage of all students enrolled in the first grade. Data are reported for public schools only.
