Why This Indicator Matters
Housing instability and homelessness threaten school attendance and student learning. Youth who face homelessness are vulnerable to serious threats including sexual exploitation, untreated mental health disorders and physical victimization. These youth are more likely to interact with police and less likely to obtain a high school diploma, circumstances that have long-term impacts on both brain development and economic outcomes. In fact, homelessness during adolescence is the number one predictor of chronic homelessness in adulthood.

These data are based on the McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness, which includes all children who “lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence”. Wayne ISD was likely undercounted significantly due to data collection issues in Detroit Public Schools Community District.
