Youth Suicide Rates in the US Increased during the COVIF-19 Pandemic The rate of young men ages 15-24 increased 8% and increased, but less for girls in that age group.

In Maine, the most recent 5-year average annual child and teen suicide rate for age 10 to 19 was 7.7 per 100,000 in 2018-2022, the lowest rate since 2012-2016. At the county level, most counties had data suppressed because there were five or fewer deaths by suicide for youth ages 10 -19. Among the 5 counties that did not have suppressed data, there were no deaths by suicide for youth ages 10 -19 from 2018 to 2022 in Franklin County. Cumberland County was the next lowest at 4.2 per 100,000 youth. York County was above the state average with 8.7 deaths per 100,000 youth over the 5-year period.

Definition
This indicator shows the rate per 100,000 of deaths by suicide for youth ages 10 to 19. It is based on 5-year averages where 2022 represents data for 2018-2022 averaged and 2021 represents data for the years 2017-2021 and so forth. Notes
Rate is based on small number of cases and should be interpreted with caution. Data has been suppressed to preserve confidentiality. Maine CDC revised their rules to suppress both numbers and rates for sub-state level such as counties when the number is less than 6. This is reflected in data from 2016-2020 and forward.
