Definition
The chronic absence rate is the percentage of students who missed 10% or more of the school year, including excused and unexcused absences (about 18 days in a 180-day school year). Students who either began the school year late or who dropped out before the end of the school year, were not included in the calculation. Chronic absenteeism predicts: lower academic performance; lower achievement scores; repeating grades; and future chronic absenteeism.

This indicator was originally based on an internal analysis by Mississippi KIDS COUNT.
Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, the MDE defined an unexcused absence as missing 37% or more of a school day (rf. Mississippi Code § 37-13-91). Due to this policy, the 2013-14 school year and subsequent school years may have higher rates of chronic absenteeism.
Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, the MDE began reporting Chronic suspension data. Data from this year forward will rely on MDE reports.
