Definition
The estimated number of children ages 0-17 who are
living in households with incomes below the federal poverty threshold.
The threshold, defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, is updated annually
and adjusted for family size. In 2022, the poverty threshold for a
family of two children and two adults was $29,678 and the threshold for one adult and one child was $20,172. You can view poverty thresholds
for other household compositions and other years here.
Data Source
U.S. Census Bureau, Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE)program. The SAIPE program produces model-based estimates for counties,
states, and school districts by combining survey data with population
estimates and administrative and other economic data. More information
on methodology and general guidelines for use of these estimates can be
found here.
Notes
A note about using older SAIPE data: From 2005 forward, SAIPE estimates incorporate U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) estimates whereas earlier SAIPE estimates incorporate U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey (CPS) estimates. SAIPE estimates from 2005 or later should not
be compared to estimates from the year 2004 or prior because of this change. In addition, the inclusion of "group quarters"
populations beginning in 2006 for ages 0-17 means that estimates for
years 2006 forward should not be compared to estimates for 2005 and prior when this
population was not included.
