Definition

This indicator represents the number of resident newborns who were screened for hearing loss and identified as having some form of hearing impairment, and were referred for further testing (i.e., a Bilateral or Unilateral Referral).

There are three possible outcomes to a hearing screening: Pass Both, Bilateral Referral, and Unilateral Referral. A Pass Both indicates that an infant had their hearing screened and passed both ears, and indicated that the child can hear. A Bilateral Referral indicates that an infant failed hearing screens in both ears and requires a referral to early intervention services. A Unilateral Referral indicates that an infant had failed one ear hearing screen but passed the other ear - and requires a referral to early intervention services.

The denominator for the percentage is total births screened for hearing loss.

GEOGRAPHY: Data include births to North Dakota residents and are presented based on the mother's/guardian's county of residence. Out-of-state births to North Dakota residents are excluded.
DATE: Calendar Year (January 1 through December 31).
LIMITATIONS: Data are not reported for geographies where the number of screened births is one through five. In these cases, "<6" is indicated and no percentage is reported. Data is also not reported if the value could be used to. calculate another suppressed value.
NOTE: Situations for which a screening did not take place include those in which the infant died before a screening could take place and those for which  the parents refused consent to have their child's hearing screened. It is currently unknown if hearing screenings are performed on the home birth population.
