Why This Indicator Matters
It is important to understand the racial and ethnic make-up of children represented in foster care to dissect which populations are being most impacted. Further analysis of the general population compared to the foster care population would be helpful to understand if racial and ethnic disproportionality exists in the overall foster care population.

Definition
The number and percent of children in out of home placement during the reporting period by race or Hispanic origin. The “Non-Hispanic Other” category includes children who were not Hispanic, not White, not Black or African American, and whose record did not indicate more than one category. This category includes a small number of American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Unable to Determine.

Race or Hispanic origin are mutually exclusive categories. Children who are of Hispanic origin are not classified as any other race.
