Why This Indicator Matters

Examining the number of housing units over time by ownership and occupation status is important in understanding changes in economic trends. Data suggests that overtime in Pennsylvania, the percentage of owner-occupied units is decreasing, while the percentage of renter-occupied units is increasing. Shifts from homeownership to renting can significantly impact children and families, affecting their financial stability, access to quality education, and overall well-being.[1] Renting often comes with higher housing cost burdens, as rental prices tend to rise faster than incomes, leaving families with less resources for essentials such as food, healthcare, and education.[2] This financial strain can lead to frequent moves and housing instability, potentially leading to poorer academic performance and emotional stress.[3]
