Definition

Data is derived from self report from person responding to the American Community Survey questionnaire.

People were classified as enrolled in school if they were attending a public or private school or college at any time during the 3 months prior to the time of interview.

Public school (is defined) as “any school or college controlled and supported primarily by a local, county, state, or federal government.”
Private schools are defined as schools supported and controlled primarily by religious organizations or other private groups.
Home schools are defined as “parental-guided education outside of public or private school for grades 1-12.”
Note:  In 2008, the school enrollment questions had several changes. “Home school” was explicitly included in the “private school, private college” category.

Respondents who marked both the “public” and “private” boxes are edited to the first entry, “public.”

Notes

N.A.: Not Available; S: Data Suppressed.

The American Community Survey is based on sample sizes and the numbers presented in this indicator are just estimates and are not to be taken as accurate counts.

The Census Bureau recommends that you:
DO compare similar period lengths, for example, 3-year to 3-year.
DON'T compare estimates from different period lengths, for example, 1-year to 3-year.
DO compare estimates from non-overlapping periods, for example, compare a 2005-2007 ACS 3-year estimate to a 2008-2010 ACS 3-year estimate.
DON'T compare overlapping periods, for example, the 2005-2007 ACS 3-year estimates to the 2006-2008 ACS 3-year estimates.
