Babies born with a gestational age of less than 37 completed weeks.

Birth certificates that did not report gestational age were not included in this tabulation. Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands are not included in the U.S. average.

Data Source

Population Reference Bureau analysis of 2007 to 2022 data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Child Trends analysis of 1990-2006 Natality MicroData files from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics.
