Definition
This indicator represents the number of persons ages 0 through 20 who are recipients of Medicaid. Medicaid is a federally funded entitlement program available to eligible children based upon need. It is designed to assist individuals and families who do not have enough income to obtain health care. Medicaid is authorized by Title XIX, a 1965 amendment to the federal Social Security Act. Medicaid differs from Medicare, which is a federally funded program for the elderly and disabled only.
The denominator for the percentage is the total population ages 0 through 20 in respective geographic areas.
