Rate of arrests for status offenses among juveniles aged 10-17, per 100,000 juveniles
Data Source
The rates are calculated using the number of drug-related offenses provided by the State of Hawaii Uniform Crime Statistics and estimates for the total population of juveniles ages 10-17 years provided by the National Center of Health Statistics. The data sources are as follows: Attorney General, State of Hawaii. " Crime in the City & County of Honolulu, 2020," "Crime in Hawaii County, 2020," and "Crime in Kauai County, 2020." Research & Statistics Branch: Crime Prevention & Justice Assistance Division.; National Center for Health Statistics. Ages 0 to 85 years and over. Vintage post-censal estimates of the resident population of the United States..., single-year of age (0, 1, 2, .., 85 years and over), bridged race, Hispanic origin, and sex. Prepared under a collaborative arrangement with the U.S. Census Bureau. Available from: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/bridged_race.htm. Please see technical notes regarding years of NCHS Vintage population estimates used for this indicator.
Notes
Status offenses include noncriminal acts or conduct which are offenses only when committed or engaged in by juveniles, under 18 years of age. These include curfew violations and runaways.
Regarding the denominators calculated using National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Vintage postcensal estimates: NCHS populations are seasonally adjusted which means that every year, NCHS estimates are revised to reflect updated input data and new NCHS population controls. However, estimates for this indicator are not updated retrospectively and the denominator using population estimates are based on the year data is made available for the numerator using Crime Statistics. For example, the denominator for year 2019 of this indicator is based on 2019 Vintage postcensal NCHS estimates, the denominator for year 2018 of this indicator is based on 2018 Vintage postcensal NCHS estimates, and so on.
For year 2020, reports from the Hawaii Office of the Attorney General were available only for the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii County, and Kauai County.
